Testicular Ultrasound Scan

Overview

A testicular ultrasound is a simple, painless, non-invasive procedure performed by a male Sonographer at Kent Medical Ultrasound (KMU). This scan examines the testicles and surrounding tissues to identify any potential issues.

Why have a testicular ultrasound scan?

The commonest reasons for having a testicular ultrasound are pain and lumps. This examination may help your doctor determine the cause of these problems. It may be possible to see conditions such as:

  • Benign cysts
  • Varicoceles where there is enlargement of the veins that transport oxygen-depleted blood away from the testicle
  • Fluid collections
  • Hernias
  • Infections
  • Fertility issues where we are able look for unusual masses, trauma or damage to the tissues or structures, abnormal swelling or inflammation along with the size and shape of the testicles.
  • Testicular cancer which although more common in younger men it can develop at any age. Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment.

How do I get the results?

After the scan, the sonographer will explain the findings. A detailed report will be sent to your doctor. If you self-refer, you will receive a copy of the report. Discuss any concerns with the sonographer before the scan.

Limitations of ultrasound

Unfortunately, ultrasound can only detect abnormalities that are present at the time of the scan. Abnormalities can develop at any time, and while the Sonographer will look for early changes, they cannot predict the future. If you have concerns about anything, please discuss them with the Sonographer before, during or after the scan.

Annual testicular assessment

KMU offers a yearly scan to check your testicles and surrounding tissues at a reduced rate. This is so that we can monitor any changes and look for early signs of cancer. We will notify you by post when your appointment is due if you wish to take up this offer.
