Frequently Asked Questions

How do I book a scan?

Patients can book a self-referral ultrasound scan by calling the clinic on 01732 897666. We do accept patients who are self-funding with a doctor’s referral (for this there is a reduction in the cost). All patients aged 16 years and under will require a GP/Consultant/Healthcare professional referral.

We are able to accept patients from all major insurance companies.

You can book your appointment by calling the clinic on 01732 897666 or by emailing us at enquiries@kentmedicalultrasound.co.uk.

If you email us or leave a telephone message then please ensure you include a telephone number so that a member of our team can contact you to arrange a convenient appointment

How do I get the results?

After the examination, the Sonographer will explain the findings and go through your report with you. You will receive two copies of the report, one for you and one for your Doctor.

How much does a scan cost?

Please refer to the Price list page. If you have any queries regarding the cost of an examination, please call us on 01732 897666.

We accept payment by debit card or credit card at the time of booking unless claiming through private medical insurance. In this case we usually invoice the insurance company directly and we will require your membership and authorisation number at the time of booking.

Please note all payments are refundable if you need to cancel your appointment.

Do I need a doctor to refer me?

All children aged 16 years and under will need a doctor’s referral. All adults can self-refer. However, if you think your doctor can give us more medical history to help us make a diagnosis and you can get a referral letter then please bring it with you.

For advice, or any questions, please contact the clinic for advice on 01732 897666.

How long does an ultrasound scan take?

Most ultrasound examinations take less than 30 minutes. Sometimes if we are scanning more than one area this can take a little longer.

Can I bring my family and friends to the scan?

Yes, but please be mindful that the Sonographer needs to concentrate, and visitors talking may cause distractions. Our scanning rooms are quite small, so a group of up to 3 people (including the patient) is ideal. If you bring young children, it’s a good idea to have books or toys, to keep them occupied. Please try to avoid bringing food.

Also, if the Sonographer finds a problem during the scan, it could be distressing to have lots of other people (especially children) present.

How do I pay for the examination?

Kent Medical Ultrasound accepts debit card and credit card payments at the time of booking.  This payment is completely refundable if you need to cancel your appointment.

For insurance claims, you will need to provide your authorization number and membership details at the time of booking as most companies accept direct invoices from us. We will not invoice your insurance company until after your examination.

Is 3D/4D baby scanning more accurate than 2D?

No, 3D/4D scans do not offer more detail than 2D scans. They provide a surface view, which may allow you to see your baby’s face.

Can you tell me the gender of my baby?

Yes, we can determine the baby’s gender (sexc) from 16 weeks, although it may not always be 100% accurate. If unsure, we will rebook you free of charge. If you do not want to know- please inform us.

Do you charge more for multiple pregnancies?

No, we do not charge extra for multiple pregnancies. If you know you are having more than one baby, please inform us when booking so we can allocate extra time for you.

Do you have disabled access?

Yes, our clinic is on the ground floor. There are disabled parking bays by the front door. We have wide access doors and a disabled toilet.

We have an electronic entry system for security and can assist you with entry if required. Please let our staff know at the time of booking if you require any assistance and we will ensure we come at meet you at the front door of the building to help you.

Do I need to pay for photos of my baby?

No, photos are included as part of the examination at no extra cost.

What happens if there is a problem found on my scan?

If a problem is detected during a pregnancy scan, the findings will be explained to you. We will arrange for you to see an appropriate healthcare professional or department if you would like us too. You will receive a copy of the report with the findings that we have explained to you in it.

For non-pregnancy ultrasound scans, where possible we will give you a copy of the report and one for you, GP/Consultant or healthcare professional. If we need to gather further information, we will email a copy of the completed report to your GP/Consultant or healthcare professional and put a copy in the post to you. Additionally, the Sonographer may contact your doctor or healthcare professional directly to discuss the results.

Will my results be confidential?

Yes, adhering to data protection regulations, your results will not be shared with anyone without your permission.

Are all your Sonographers qualified?

Yes, our services are delivered by appropriately qualified, HCPC registered Sonographers, who have experience in the NHS and private practice. Please see more about our Sonographers and their qualifications on the “About Us” page.

Does the ultrasound scan hurt?

It is a usually painless procedure, but you might feel some discomfort if you are in severe pain while the probe is pressed against your skin. If at any point you are in discomfort during the examination please let the Sonographer know as this may be an indication as to where your problem is.
